Update:
On 20 July 2022, Council moved:
THAT:
1. Council support the proposal to change the locality name from Balmoral to Balmoral Village.
2. Council submit the proposal to the Geographic Names Board (GNB) for consideration.
Should the "locality name" of Balmoral be changed?
Over recent years Wingecarribee Shire Council has become aware that the name Balmoral has caused various problems for residents because it is often confused with ‘Balmoral’ in Sydney, and ‘Balmoral’ in Lake Macquarie, leading to delivery and service issues which require considerable effort to overcome.
We have also heard that some residents with a Buxton address would prefer to have a Balmoral locality.
Council is seeking feedback from the Balmoral-Buxton community on naming options.
An information kit has been prepared and posted to ensure that each property owner and resident receives the same details before completing a survey to provide feedback.
The survey asks a number of questions about the issues associated with not having a unique locality name, naming preferences and interest in creating an entry statement for the village.
The feedback Council receives from the survey will allow us to evaluate the extent of community concern over the duplicated name and gauge support for a possible re-naming and extension of the current Balmoral Locality boundary.
Please take some time to read the information provided before sharing your thoughts in the survey.
